In March 2022 Microsoft released a feature that allows you to change the appearance of your chat windows in Microsoft Teams. Specifically, this new feature allows you to change the density of chat windows in Teams. Chat density refers to the amount of space between the messages in a Chat conversation.
The standard appearance of chat conversations is now referred to as “comfy” mode and Microsoft has added a “compact” mode which significantly reduces the amount of space between messages allowing you to see more of a conversation at any point in time. As can be seen in the screenshot to the left, the comfy chat density displays messages in bubbles with a greater amount of space between messages. When using the comfy chat density in Teams, less of a conversation is visible in the chat window at any given time. Based on my testing of both modes, I found that I was better able to follow the natural flow of the conversation when using the comfy chat density.
The screenshot on the right illustrates the new Microsoft Teams compact chat density which dramatically reduces the amount of space between messages and also does away with the chat bubbles. As a result of the subtle changes, more of the chat conversation is visible in the chat window at any given time. Personally, while I appreciate being able to see more content at any given time, I did find it a little harder to follow the natural flow of a conversation while using the new Teams compact mode. Specifically, I found it a little more difficult to determine who the author of a message was (yes, even despite the fact that profile pictures still appear to the left of a message).
